Martin Puryear Art Book

A book profiles the work of sculptor Martin Puryear. The book consists of an introductory essay about the artist and a project section of selected works of his. I picked the phrase 'formal allusion' from the introductory article as the key concept of the book. The project section covers two dominant formal motifs Puryear frequently revisited, which are head and phrygian cap. The choice of work highlights the referential quality of Puryear's art, bringing out the theme of 'formal allusion'.

Design wise, I contrast sharp square shapes with sloppy sketches to represent the clean appearance of Puryear's sculptures and the purely manual process hiding behind these artworks. The book adopted a horizontal layout with a consistent hang line on top of the pages to establish a stable and calm tone that matches with the impression of Puryear's works..
